| Abstract/Contents: | "It is difficult to predict the behaviour of a turf surface, or to examine the soil and plant processes that determine the properties of a surface, because of the absence of adequate, objective techniques for assessing turf. An impact hammer, which measures the resistance of a surface to deformation (i.e. its hardness), has potential for the objective assessment of cricket pitches and other sports surfaces. The hammer is inexpensive, portable, quick to use, and operated by one person. Results for turf cricket pitches were consistent with ball behaviour and with the properties of the pitch soil." |
