Abstract/Contents:"The response of renovated turf of Lolium perenne L. to fertilizer nitrogen was studied on a sand rootzone and on the local topsoil. Trials were renovated in May 1983, allowed to reestablish until September 1983, when artificial wear treatments were started and these continued until May 1984. During 1983 the following nitrogen treatments were applied: 0, 25, 100, 225, 400 and 625 kg ha-1 N. Ground cover was measured before, during and after wear. The results showed that during wear the plots receiving high levels of nitrogen deteriorated more quickly than those receiving intermediate levels so that an optimum nitrogen leve at each date of assessment was observed. Disregarding the date for August 1983 (before wear) and for October 1983 on sand where the response curve was flattened in the region of the optimum, the average optimum nitrogen input for maximum ground cover during wear was 264 kg ha-1, close to the figure of 289 kg ha-1 observed previously for swards in their first season of use. The value of the optimum nitrogen input decreased with the progress of wear and it seems likely that there is no universal optimum without reference to the wear received. It is suggested that for practical purposes a target value for nitrogen fertilization sould be 225 kg ha-1 yr-1. The reasons for this proposal are discussed."
