Abstract/Contents:Discusses thatch. Mentions some of the potential benefits of moderate amounts of thatch on golf course greens, which include: increased wear tolerance, cushioning, and added resiliency. Details many of the problems with heavy thatch layers. Problems include poor water and nutrient retention, localized dry spots, increased disease potential, increased insect populations, and decreased pesticide effectiveness. Also explores some of the causes of thatch buildup and ways to prevent it.
