Abstract/Contents:"This report describes a linked set of three preliminary trials of cultivars of Poa spp. at Bingley, in 1982-4. There were 27 cultivars of smooth-stalked meadow-grass (Poa pratensis), two of rough-stalked meadow-grass (P. trivalis) and one of P. supina which was compared with P. annua from two sources. In one trials, the main feature was football-type wear in winter: cover after wear and shear strength were the two most important characters, and 'Julia' and 'Bar Pp ZW' were good in both. In a trial mown at 8 mm in its second year and then given abrasive wear, 'Obelisk' was outstandingly good, and several other cultivars very satisfactory. Both trials suggest that new cultivars can substantially improve the value of P. pratensis in several types of sports turf. The other species under trial sowed no value for such uses. In a trial cut once a year, to examine suitability for low maintenance regimes, some cultivars of P. pratensis were better than others, judged by bulk of growth and winter greeness. It is, however, questionable whether P. pratensis is as suitable for such regimes as P. trivalis, which establishes faster and produces less bulk, even though it has some disadvantages. Poa supina was broadly similar to the STRI exotype of P. annua in most respects, but with less disease susceptibility and a distinctive light green color, particularly in spring, which might make it interesting for special uses in ornamental turf."
