| Abstract/Contents: | "Basamid Granular (dazomet) is a commercial soil fumigant that controls weeds, fungi, and nematodes in soils. The purpose of this study was to determine 1) the effects of different rates of surface-applied dazomet on P. annua seed germination and 2) if covering dazomet-treated areas with plastic sheets can enhance inhibition of P. annua seed germination. Treatments included dazomet applied to the turf surface at 392, 343, 294, and 196 kg/ha and covered with sheets of clear plastic (4.0 mil thick); dazomet applied to the turf surface at the same four rates and not covered; and two glyphosate controls (one covered with plastic and one not covered). Approximately one month after dazomet was applied, P. annua seedlings were counted in all plots. All dazomet treatments (covered and not covered) yielded lower P. annua seedling counts than the glyphosate controls. Seedling numbers were reduced in plastic-covered dazomet treatments compared to noncovered treatments. There were no differences in the number of P. annua seedlings among the different rates of dazomet in covered treatments. However, seedling counts increased with decreasing rates in noncovered treatments." |
