Abstract/Contents:"The tawny mole cricket, Scapteriscus borellii, is a major pest on grasses in the Southern U.S. It causes significant damage to turf on golf courses, athletic fields, lawns and roadsides. Controlling this pest costs millions of dollars yearly. Although mole crickets can be controlled with chemicals, genetic resistance in cultivars can reduce pesticide applications. In 1993, we began screening over 27,000 Cynodon transvaalensis x C. dactylon interspecific triploid hybrids in field plots and in greenhouse studies. By 1997, we selected the best 103 hybrids that showed non-preference and/or resistance to feeding by the tawny mole cricket. These 103 hybrids were evaluated in replicated 4.2 m x 4.2 m plots from 1997 to 2000. In 1999, ratings for TifSport, Tifdwarf, TifEagle and 87 of the experimental hybrids (range) were 1.8, 6.0, 4.0, and (1.0 to 2.0), respectively, where 1=no mole cricket damage and 9=complete damage. Studies in the greenhouse where insects are caged on a specific hybrid confirm the field studies. Hybrids had been previously selected for desirable turf quality and mowing height tolerance in a range from 0.6 to 2.0 cm."
