Abstract/Contents: | "Interest is increasing in using seeded zoysiagrass on transition zone golf courses. Research was conducted to evaluate chemical and cultural treatments for enhancing establishment of 'Zenith' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) seeded directly into an existing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) turf in mid-June. Prior to planting (49 kg/ha), the study area was core aerified and vertically sliced. Treatments imposed on ryegrass included a single application of glyphosate or a growth regulator (trinexapac-ethyl or mefluidide) before seeding, or scalping three days weekly until emerging zoysiagrass reached the scalping height (6 mm). Traffic was applied with a roller three days weekly to one-half of all plots to simulate effects of wear and compaction on establishment. At the end of the first season, zoysiagrass coverage was 75% in glyphosate-treated, nontrafficked plots; scalping resulted in approximately 12% zoysiagrass coverage. Traffic reduced zoysiagrass coverage in glyphosate-treated turf by over 50%. Untreated turf, or that treated with growth regulators alone, had no perceptible zoysiagrass coverage at the end of the first season." |
