Abstract/Contents: | "Fluridone (trade name Sonar) is labeled for use to control aquatic weeds in bodies of water. The label for fluridone bans the use of treated water for 30 days for use to irrigate golf courses. Our objective was to determine the impact of fluridone on the growth and performance of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris), annual bluegrass (Poa annua), and bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis) putting greens. PVC tubes 10.2 cm in diameter and 30.5 cm long were filled with 5 cm of gravel and 22.9 cm of greens mix that met USGA specifications. Sod of the appropriate species was placed on each tube and tubes were placed on greenhouse benches. Fluridone treatments of 0, 5, 10, 25 and 50 ppb were applied in 0.4 cm of water. Applications of fluridone were made daily for 30 days followed by a 30 day recovery period during which all pots received tap water on a daily basis. Pots were rated twice per week for color, percent cover, and percent white tissue. Percent cover by creeping bentgrass and bermudagrass was unaffected by the fluridone treatments but annual bluegrass density declined at the 25 and 50 ppb treatments. At the recommended use rate, use of fluridone treated water on creeping bentgrass and bermudagrass appears to be safe." |
