Abstract/Contents:"Heat stress is a major factor causing summer bentgrass decline during summer in the transitional zone. Heat injury in creeping bentgrass may involve oxidative stress. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the activities of antioxidant enzymes and heat tolerance in creeping bentgrass under field conditions. L-93 and Penncross were mowed at 5/32 or 1/8 inch on an USGA-specification green. Electrolyte leakage increased during summer and then decreased in the fall. The activities of antioxidants, including SOD, CAT, POD, and AP, increased at the beginning of the high temperature period, dramatically decreased in the middle of the summer, and then recovered gradually in the fall. Raising mowing height from 1/8 inch to 5/32 inch increased the enzyme activities only at the beginning of the summer. MDA content increased during the high temperature period and then decreased when air temperature was low. Antioxidant enzymes protected plants of creeping bentgrass from oxidative damage by reducing lipid peroxidation at the beginning of the summer, especially under low mowing height."
