Abstract/Contents:"The warm-season turfgrasses, common and hybrid bermudagrasses, are used widely in Southern California. Typically, bermudagrass growth slows and ultimately stops in late fall and winter and plant dormancy results in most locations. It was the objective of this project to examine cultural programs that influence dormancy or turfgrass color of three bermudagrasses during late fall and winter in Riverside, California. The common bermudagrasses, 'Princess,''Sahara,' and 'Sultan' were studied. Cultural treatments for the two year study included two nutrients, nitrogen and iron, and a cultivation treatment of vertical mowing. It was found that cultivar color closely tracked the decreasing temperatures in the fall, starting in November, with the greatest color loss occurring when soil temperatures moved to 10C level. Nitrogen treatments had the most significant and consistent impact on color amount and retention, with the results being rate dependent. The iron and vertical mowing treatments had little influence on color retention with the three turfgrasses. Late-season vertical mowing yielded reduced color, especially on 'Sultan.'"
