| Abstract/Contents: | "Topdressing golf greens just prior to winter has been recommended as a method of reducing winter desiccation. This study was conducted to determine if heavy rates of topdressing in late fall decreased winter survival of turf. Two sands and two sand/peat mixtures were topdressed at depths of 2.4 and 4.8 mm after application of winter fungicides to one green at each of three golf courses. Late fall topdressing led to earlier growth of turf in the spring as compared to no topdressing. Earlier spring growth and warmer spring temperatures were most pronounced with heavy topdressing treatments of darker-colored sand/peat mixtures. However, heavy topdressing treatments also led to increased winter damage to turf in one of three years of this experiment. Depth of topdressing treatment was more important to damage than type of sand or mixture topdressed. Heavy topdressing of golf greens in late fall leads to earlier spring growth, but may increase chances of winter injury." |
