Abstract/Contents:"The ability of the growth regulator ethephon (Proxy) to manage turf vegetative growth and Poa annua seedheads was evaluated on fairways and on greens. In 8 trials conducted on Southern California golf courses, a single application of ethephon at the recommended rate (3.8 kg/ha) had a significant impact on Poa seedheads, with suppression levels ranging from 69% to 86% when compared against the non-treated check. Suppression levels reached their peak 3-6 weeks after application, but significant effects were seen even 8 weeks after application. No phytotoxicity was observed on any turf species. However, ethephon applications resulted in little or no reduction in turf vegetative growth. In contrast, the growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl (Primo) resulted in significant growth regulation of turfgrass that ranged from 64%-74%, but had little or no impact on Poa seedhead suppression. Combinations of ethephon (3.8 kg /ha) and trinexapac-ethyl (0.05 kg/ha) applied to bentgrass/Poa greens capitalized on the best attributes of both products, resulting in high levels of seedhead suppression (85%-97%), as well as denser, darker, slower growing turf."
