Abstract/Contents:"Overseeding creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) into a live creeping bentgrass turf is habitually practiced in an attempt to improve and/or alter genetic make-up of the turf. Poa annua L.) readily infests these same turfs. Controlled environment studies were carried out to ascertain the effect of turf condition on spring-simulated overseeding success. 'L-93' creeping bentgrass and two P. annua lines were seeded into aeration holes in live turf and turf previously subjected to 2 weeks of drought stress. P. annua was better able to establish and persist in a live turf than creeping bentgrass. Creeping bentgrass was less likely to survive once emerged. Competition with live turf greatly reduced plant dry weight, growth stage and tiller number for both species. Drought stress needs to severely restrict regrowth to allow for adequate creeping bentgrass establishment. Annual bluegrass is better able than creeping bentgrass to establish in an existing creeping bentgrass stand. Altering the genetic make-up of a live creeping bentgrass stand via interseeding under spring conditions in Atlantic Canada will prove to be difficult."
