Abstract/Contents:"The fate of 15N-labeled KNO3 applied to Kentucky bluegrass turf under irrigation, including direct field measurements of denitrification, was studied during the spring and summer of 1999 using modified PVC cylinders. Daily gas samples were taken from 0800-1100 h, 1100-1400 h, and 1400-1700 h with two replications using three separate lysimeters to minimize microclimatic variation. Upon completion, six PVC cylinders were excavated, turfgrass was removed, and soil divided into 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-25 cm sections. The plant and soil were oven-dried (60°C) and ground to pass through a 0.15mm screen. Kjeldahl digests of soil and plant samples were used to determine total N. Subsequent 15N analyses were performed on the plant, soil, and gas samples using a Nuclide Model 3-60-RMS mass spectrometer. Results indicate continuous denitrification losses throughout the irrigation cycle. Labeled fertilizer N emitted as N2 and N2O was 5.3 and 22.6% of applied N for the spring and summer studies, respectively. Total recovery of labeled fertilizer nitrogen ranged from 57.4 to 73.2% of applied N. Because of the lack of quantitative recovery, laboratory and field studies were initiated to determine the effect of the plant system on recovery of labeled fertilizer N by comparing bare soil with turfgrass plots. Results of these experiments will be discussed."
