| Abstract/Contents: | "Ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) is a persistent, difficult-to-control weed in many home lawns. A field study was conducted to determine the effect of commonly used preemergence herbicides for controlling the spread of ground ivy. Based on visual ratings of ground ivy cover, Gallery (isoxaben) reduced ground ivy spread to more than half the amount of the control. A second field study was conducted to examine the effect of a one-time fall application of commonly used postemergence herbicides for controlling ground ivy. No treatment provided complete control; however, products containing 2,4-D, especially as an ester formulation, performed well. At 35 weeks after treatment, for example, the highest labeled recommended rates of 2,4-D (ester) and Trimec Classic reduced ground ivy by 88% and 48%, respectively, as compared to the control. A cultural control study was conducted to investigate the effect of yearly timing and rate of nitrogen application on ground ivy growth. Results will be discussed." |
