| Abstract/Contents: | "Genes associated with resistance to gray leaf spot, caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc., are being studied in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Shreb.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Given hot humid conditions, this disease can devastate a plot of perennial ryegrass in a short period of time. Currently, genetic resistance to this disease has not been identified in perennial ryegrass varieties. The objective of this study is to identify markers associated with gray leaf spot resistance genes in segregating populations of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. Analysis is based on greenhouse evaluation of progeny from segregating populations. Inoculum consists of a mixture of isolates sprayed onto 4-week old plants. Resistant and susceptible DNA bulks are constructed for marker analysis following gray leaf spot screening of progeny. Studies on inheritance of and markers associated with resistance to gray leaf spot will be included." |
