Abstract/Contents:"To improve establishment when seeding turfgrasses, it is important to minimize crabgrass competition in spring seedlings and annual bluegrass competition in fall seedlings. Dithiopyr has both pre and postemergence herbicidal properties that may limit annual grass competition in new seedlings. The objective of this study was to determine the safety of dithiopyr applied after seeding of tall fescue and creeping bentgrass in the greenhouse. Dithiopyr 1EC was applied at 0.28 and 0.56 kg ha-1 at 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28 days after emergence (DAE) of 'Bonaza II' tall fescue and 'Providence' creeping bentgrass in the greenhouse. Clipping weights were taken weekly and above ground plant weights were recorded at the termination of the study (49 DAE). Dithiopyr did not affect clipping weights nor above ground plant weights weights when applied to tall fescue seedlings as early as 14 DAE at 0.28 kg ha-1 and as early as 17 DAE at 0.56 kg ha-1. Both rates of dithiopyr decreased clipping weights of creeping bentgrass on all application dates, but applications after 7 DAE had no effect on above ground plant weight. These experiments as well as results from summer field studies will be discussed."
