Abstract/Contents: | "Off-types, a recurring problem on putting greens planted with triploid hybrid bermudagrasses, exhibit unsightly discoloration and often fail to root to the soil matrix, interfering with ball roll. Results from two experiments aimed at clarifying the basis of their occurrence will be presented. The first experiment consists of AFLP fingerprinting off-types from golf courses in the Southeast US, to determine if they are contaminants (i.e., a different triploid variety than the one presumptively planted) or genetic variants arising from the variety planted. The second experiment is a multi-cycle test aimed at learning if phenocopies of off-types can be induced by subjecting triploid bermudagrasses to acute doses of the dinitroaniline herbicides pendimethalin and oryzalin. To control for contamination, breeder's material of 6 triploid bermudagrass varieties ('Champion', 'Floradwarf', MS-Supreme', 'Tifdwarf', 'Tifeagle', & 'Tifgreen') is established in sterile medium in greenhouse flats. Samples for establishing subsequent cycles are taken from herbicide-treated tissue of the preceeding cycle. As a means of assessing genetic and cytological stability of the treated materials, AFLP bands and chromosome numbers are monitored within each variety over cycles. Results are present from cycles 0 through 3." |
