Abstract/Contents:"A number of bentgrass cultivars have been commercially released for use on golf course playing surfaces in recent years; however, the relative differences in tolerance to traffic has not been studied. Field studies were initiated on sandy loam and sand root zones to evaluate the performance of bentgrasses managed as putting green turf under traffic stress. Studies used a two factor (traffic stress and bentgrass cultivar) split-plot design. Main plots were the traffic stress treatments including no traffic, wear, compaction, and the combination of wear and compaction. Subplot treatments were bentgrass cultivars including both creeping bentgrass and velvet bentgrass species. The sandy loam study was seeded September 1998 and traffic treatments were implemented August 1999. The sand root zone was seeded May 1999 and traffic treatments were initiated October 1999. Both studies were mowed to 3.2mm. As expected, traffic reduced turf quality. During the late summer of 1999, wear lowered turf quality more than the compaction treatment and the combination of wear and compaction did not affected [affect] quality ratings more than wear alone on the sandy loam study. Longer-term evaluations of bentgrass performance under traffic stress in both studies will be discussed."
