| Abstract/Contents: | "Amended sand is routinely used for the construction of root zones for golf putting greens. Putting greens root zone mixtures were constructed in two locations to examine the effect of sand size distribution and microenvironmental conditions on the performance of creeping bentgrass. Five sand size distributions, conforming to and finer than USGA specifications for particle size distribution, were amended with sphagnum moss peat at 9:1 (v/v) ratio. Initial physical property data of the sand/peat mixtures were collected in the laboratory prior to construction. Non-destructive core samples were removed from the constructed root zones 16 months after establishment (MAE) to 'L-93' creeping bentgrass. Data for initial physical properties and those measured 16 MAE will be compared. Root growth responses to physical properties and microenvironment also will be discussed." |
