Abstract/Contents:Presents a study investigating alternative spike traction on golf courses. Thirty-six golfers were asked to try on various shoes with different brands of alternative spikes and metal spikes without knowing what type of spikes they had selected. Then they used the shoes while teeing off on a driving range, swinging a club on a slope, and hitting balls from a sand bunker. They were asked to rate the traction provided by the shoe. Results from the driving range tee "revealed that the Spider Bite, Black Traction, and Black Widow provided the same amount of traction as the 8 mm spike." Also, "the 8 mm spike received the highest percentage of excellent ratings with Spiker Bite and Black Widow giving the same amount of traction" on the slope. "In striking a ball from a sand bunker Black Widow received the highest percentage of excellent ratings with Spider Bite, 8 mm metal, Scorpion, and Eclipse statistically equivalent to the Black Widow." A long-term wear study was also initiated on a golf green. Results revealed that "with respect to turfgrass wear ratings, the metal spike received the numerically lowest rating on all dates."
