Abstract/Contents:"Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] kills established grass species in turf and pasture. The effect of treatment on subsequent grass seedings or on residual seed that may later volunteer is important. Seven treatments were applied to soil in pots in the greenhouse seeded with Poa pratensis L. (Merion), Festuca rubra L. (Pennlawn), and F. arundinacea (Kentucky 31). Treatment sequences included: (a) grass seed placed on soil before spraying with herbicide; (b) seed on soil surface no herbicide; (c) seed placed on soil after herbicide; (d) herbicide on soil, cover with 1/4-inch soil, seed on surface; (e) seed placed on soil, cover with 1/4-inch soil before herbicide; (f) same as "e" but no herbicide; and (g) seed on soil, herbicide treatment before covering with 1/4-inch soil. Glyphosate was applied at rate of 4 lb/a. All pots were no significant differences in germination or rate of growth among treatments except for greatly reduced germinations in treatments "e" and "f". Similar results occurred in two separate experiments. I have no logical explanation for these differences. Treatments "e" to "g" are underway again plus some other variations that will be reported orally. This data indicates that renovation treatments with glyphosate will not reduce volunteer grass plants from residual seed on the treated site nor should there be any effect of glyphosate on the germination of seed sown in the area immediately after treatment."
