Abstract/Contents:Describes a technique of assessing turfgrass problems by looking below the ground. Includes smelling the dirt to see "whether there is a sweet healthy smell, a neutral or absence of smell, or a serious 'rotten egg' smell." Also discusses "possible visual symptoms of soil layering or black layer,...an examination for an objectionable depth of thatch and/or mat," examining the rooting depth, "examination of the rhizomes,...[and being] alert for signs of pest problems."
