Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the impact of the CSA Z614 National Standard for Playscapes which will affect the maintenance of playgrounds in Canada. States that "there are three aspects to the problem that has become quickly evident to playground professionals. Firstly, 70 percent of all playground injuries are the result of falls. Secondly, most playground surfaces (as high as 80 per cent), especially in high traffic areas, will not meet these newly established requirements. Thirdly, the requirement for a protective surface area for swings was increased, and these additional areas, in most cases, will not meet the requirements of the standard." Describes the maintenance of sand, pea gravel, wood systems, and synthetic surfaces on playgrounds. |
