Abstract/Contents:Discusses the increasing use of organic fertilizers. States that "organics offer a slow, sustained and consistent release of nutrients that can feed a plant for up to several months. Furthermore, because organic fertilizers have a very low salt index, they are less likely to cause burning in turfgrass applications than synthetic fertilizers are." Profiles various organic fertilizers, including biosolids, manure fertilizers, meal products, and blends of plant and animal sources. States that "organic fertilizers suffer from one major drawback: They are frequently more expensive than synthetic fertilizers. However, consumers in both residential and commercial markets have begun to realize the economic benefit of organic fertilizers: The slow-release quality of organics means that fewer applications are needed."
