Abstract/Contents:Combinations of 3 N fertilization rates (0.25, 0.5, and 1 lb N/1000 ft2 per growing month from April to September) and 2 mowing heights (1.5 and 3 inches) were applied to turf of St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) cv. Texas Common. The effects on turf quality, shoot density and thatch-forming tendency from April to November are shown in tables. As the N rate rose so the quality and shoot density increased, quality being highest during September and October whereas maximum shoot density was found in August. Thatch accumulation also rose with N and was greater with mowing at 3 inches rather than 1.5 inches.
