Abstract/Contents: | "There have been no Nationally co-ordinated turfgrass evaluation trials undertaken in Australia with turf managers making their turf selections based on seed company trials and overseas data. Many of the couchgrasses (Cynodon sp.) used in Australia have been hybrids from the USA and have been introduced with insufficient evaluation to determine their suitability for specific environmental conditions. A National couchgrass evaluation project was established to assess the merits of 15 couchgrass varieties in five states representing the main sportsturf centres of Australia. The couchgrass varieties in the trials included, standard varieties already in use, new commercial varieties and new experimental selections. Other than in Queensland, there were 1 or 2 outstanding varieties at each location based on the calculated performance index. Windsor Green and CI were the predominant Australian selections with the introduced hybrid Santa Ana (C dactylon x C transvaalensis) also rating very highly. These trials have provided base data for turf managers on which selections can be made." |
