Abstract/Contents: | "St. Augustinegrass was inoculated by transplanting newly rooted sprigs into soil heavily infested with Heterodera leuceilyma. Sprigs were removed from the inoculum after 24 h, roots were washed, and the sprigs were transplanted into 10-cm plastic pots containing soil previously fumigated with methyl bromide (0.59 gm/liter). One or two sprigs were removed daily for 50 days and stained with acid fuchsin for observation. Following penetration, the larvae began to swell and their genital primordia lengthened. The second molt occurred 7 days after penetration. The cuticle of the third-stage larvae had longitudinal ridges. By the middle of the third stage, the genital primordium of the female was V-shaped, with the bottom of the V directed towards the rectum; the genital primordium of the male was J-shaped, with the crook directed anteriorly. Third-stage larval males also had two subcuticular, longitudinal rows of "cells." The third molt occurred 15-20 days after penetration. The ovaries of the fourth-stage larval females grew anteriorly with very little coiling. Males of this stage lengthened and became flexed three times within the third-stage cuticle. The fourth and final molt occurred 18-22 days after penetration. Bodies of the females hardened by the 27th day and were packed with eggs by the 34th day. A gelatinous matrix surrounded the vulva by the 40th day. Males did not emerge from the third and fourth stage cuticles until the 27th day." |
