| Abstract/Contents: | Haplaxius crudus (Van. D.) is a root pest of coconut palm in Florida and the Caribbean, which is suspected of being a vector of a pathogenic mycoplasma; it also feeds, in the nymphal stage, on the roots of a grass, Stenotaphrum secundatum. Methods are described for the rearing of pathogen-free colonies in the laboratory in order to study its biology and to provide large numbers of test insects for transmission experiments. Well-established individual runners of S. secundatum were placed with the cut end in a flask of nutrient solution and the distal end, with roots growing from the nodes, in a plastic petri dish containing moist filter paper as a substrate for the roots; the lid of the dish had a slit to admit the grass stem and a hole covered with fine mesh screen for ventilation. Eggs were readily obtained when adults were confined in the dishes with a small quantity of ground coconut husk as an oviposition medium. Mass-rearing of H. crudus was also carried out in the greenhouse on tufts of S. secundatum transplanted on to sheets of coconut husk fibre soaked in nutrient solution. These methods could also be used for rearing other root-feeding Homoptera. |
