| Abstract/Contents: | "Based on research data from agronomic crop canopies, the turfgrass phylloplane is assumed to be a harsh environment for microorganisms, prone to extremes in temperature, moisture, and UV-B. Biological control agents that are not adapted to foliar environments are particularly sensitive to these extremes. In recent research in turfgrass canopies, temperature, humidity and leaf wetness were found to be relatively buffered, however, more resembling those of the rhizosphere. Perhaps for this reason, biocontrol agents of rhizosphere origins can colonize turf foliage to a higher degree than foliage of field crop plants. UV-B is an important factor in turfgrass canopies, with significant penetration to the soil surface. Leaf under-surfaces, especially in the upper canopy regions, are exposed to relatively high levels of reflected radiation. UV-B may contribute to colonization by some applied biocontrol agents being limited to the lower canopy, and consequently, having lower efficacy against pathogens that can infect all foliar parts." |
