Abstract/Contents:"In 1973 the chinch bug resistant cultivar of St. Augustinegrass'Floratam'was released for use in lawns. Since then this variety has become a major component of certified sod sales in Florida. Uncertified sod also bearing the designation 'Floratam' has been sold and has caused con fusion in the industry as to the authenticity of the material. In order to test the use of simple identification tools, such as vegetative characters, I began in 1976 to accumulate clonal samples of St. Augustinegrass. These samples include sprigs from the breeder's block and the foundation block of 'Flora tam', as well as questionable samples supplied by purchasers of sod. A series of descriptive experiments was performed, and several conclusions made: (1) 'Floratam' is an identifiable cultivar, and valuable identification tools include stolon dimensions, leaf thickness, and chromosome number; (2) large error variance is attributable to environments, and precise comparisons must be done within uniform environ ments; (3) by these methods 'Floratam' can be distinguished from all other cultivars and most other genotypes of St. Augustinegrass; (4) 'Floratam' is aneuploid, low in fertility, and a poor seedhead producer, so that the likelihood of seedling contamination of production fields is remote; (5) four samples of sod sold as 'Floratam' were misidentified, most likely due to a confusion or misrepresentation of variety name during production or distribution. It is recommended that simple identification tools be applied and integrated with other variety protection procedures."
