Abstract/Contents:"Disease incidence in turfgrass research plots is generally assessed by visual ratings or by counting and measuring diseased areas, techniques which produce variable data and are labor-intensive. Studies were undertaken to assess the potential of digital image analysis as a tool to accurately quantitate [quantify] disease incidence in turfgrass research plots. Digital images of diseased bermudagrass research plots were taken with a Nikon digital camera and incidence of disease was measured by visual assessment or with a linear grid. Digital images were analyzed using SigmaScan Software, a program that can identify specific colors in a digital image and then count the area of the image field that contains the color. Diseased area determined by SigmaScan software [Software] was regressed against the amount of area determined either through visual assessments or grid measurements. Excellent results were obtained using SigmaScan software, especially when the data was regressed against physical measurements of the diseased area. This technique should provide researchers with a fast, easy method of quantifying diseased areas in research plots."
