| Abstract/Contents: | "Genetic analysis of plant-pathogen interactions has demonstrated that resistance to infection is often determined by the interaction of dominant plant resistance (R) genes and dominant pathogen-encoded avirulence (Avr) genes. It was postulated that R genes encode receptors for Avr determinants that subsequently activate plant defense responses usually resulting in localised cell death at the point of pathogen ingress. A large number of R genes and their congnate Avr genes have now been analysed at the molecular level. R gene loci are extremely polymorphic, particularly in sequences that are thought to confer Avr recognition specificity. A major challange is to determine how Avr perception by R proteins triggers the plant defence response. This may facilitate the rational design of R genes that recognise defined pathogen proteins in order to engineer durable disease resistance in crop plants." |
