| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a breeding program with the objective of identifying "genetic resistance to speckled snow mold in creeping bentgrass." Reports "the initial results of our collection expeditions and snow mold screening experiments." Results include that "reaction to this speckled snow mold pathogen was highly repeatable among replicates and resulted in biologically and statistically significant differences among clones" and that "genes for snow mold resistance appear to be present in very low frequency in many creeping bentgrass cultivars." Concludes that "we have discovered what appears to be genetic resistance to the speckled snow mold pathogen using some relatively simple collection and screening methods" but cautions that "before we become too excited about these results, we must verify that this apparent resistance is controlled by genes...[and] determine if the clones with resistance to this race of T. ishikariensis are also resistant to other races of this pathogen and to other snow mold pathogens." |
