Abstract/Contents:Presents a study to evaluate the influence of four different microenvironments on ten putting greens with various root zone mix compositions. Each microenvironment was rated on the qualities of air temperature, air relative humidity, radiation, soil temperature, and wind speed. The experimental putting green areas were evaluated for moisture status, bentgrass root and shoot growth, disease severity, and putting green quality with and without traffic. Results include that "with daily irrigation at 70% of estimated evapotranspiration rates, putting green quality suffered under full sun due to localized dry spot. Thirty percent shade eliminated much of the localized dry spot and putting green quality improved. Further increases in shading and decreases in air movement led to declines in putting green quality, particularly when traffic was applied. Accelerated shoot growth of more succulent tissue rendered the putting greens more susceptible to mechanical damage. The consequences were turfgrass thinning, followed by invasion by algae. With the single irrigation regime, none of the root zone mixes were capable of yielding putting greens of acceptable quality across all four microenvironments."
