| Abstract/Contents: | "North Carolina's residents spend $734 million in the maintenance of over 2 million acres of turf (Table 1 & 2). The value of equipment used for turf maintenance is estimated at 1.3 billion dollars. These numbers clearly reflect the importance of the turf industry to our state's economy. The most widely used grass across all turf segments (golf, lawns, roadsides, etc.) is tall fescue (52%). However, 55% of golf course turf is bermudagrass, but 80% of golf greens are bentgrass. North Carolina's 478 golf courses receive over 12 million rounds of golf each year. Weeds and poor soil were reported by 15% of turf managers as the most pressing problems. Budget and traffic were the next most significant problems reported by 14 and 13% of respondents, respectively. The survey which reports these turf statistics was conducted by the North Carolina Crop & Livestock Reporting Service for the NCDA and was sponsored by the TCNC."
