Abstract/Contents:Presents a study evaluating the management of A and G series bentgrasses and DW-184, a new variety of perennial Poa annua , under Wisconsin growing conditions. Results include that "'A-4' provided the highest quality and darkest green turf from a visual perspective, followed by 'G-2'. 'Penncross' and 'DW-184' had significantly lesser color, quality, and density." However, the 'A-4' turf had high thatch development rates and "the turf became puffy by the end of 1999." Overall, 'G-2' was considered the best cultivar "because it maintained superior density and fine leaf texture without yielding the puffiness of 'A-4'" and "[allowed] more of the topdressing to work itself into the turf." The density of the A and G bentgrasses "[does] not allow as much of the topdressing to penetrate the turf compared to 'Penncross'." The study is ongoing and will continue into the 2000 growing season.
