Abstract/Contents: | Describes an ongoing study to determine the "cold weather hardiness of ornamental grasses." Thus far, "70 different species from 37 different genera" were planted and studied. Plants were segregated into three categories: "Group 1 (The most winter hardy and recommended for USDA Zone 4), Group 2 (Some of the plants die or show extensive winter injury)" and "Group 3 (most or all of the plants died thus are not recommended as perennials for Zone 4)". Group 1 included Alopecurus pratensis ('Aureus'), Carex ('The Beatles'), and others. Group 2 included Deschampsia caespitosa ('Goldstaub'), Juncus effusus ('Spiralis'), and others. Group 3 consisted of Acorus gramineus ('Variegatus') and Luzula nivea, among others. Notes that the "study is in its fourth year and will continue for several more." |
