Abstract/Contents:Discusses the research findings on pesticides, stating that "rather than moving into our water supplies, researchers have found that most of the pesticide applied to turfgrass remains in the turf soil/thatch zone. This is the area of maximum turfgrass and microbial activity and where the pesticides need to be to do their work. Over time, these pesticides are broken down by microorganisms in the soil/thatch zone as carbon food sources and ultimately released as carbon dioxide." Focuses on six factors influencing pesticide fate: solubility, sorption, biological degradation, chemical degradation, volatilization, and plant uptake. Also discusses turf's biological filtering, stating that "turfgrass, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing and a safe and clean play surface, has proven to be very effective in filtering potential contaminants or pollutants present in the air, rain or other run-off as it acts to mitigate against these materials moving to ground or surface waters and non-target organisms such as man."
