Abstract/Contents:Presents a study to determine whether the presence of endophytic fungi enhances the performance of Paenibacillus popilliae for control of Japanese beetle grubs. "Flats were sown with either endophyte-infected or endophyte-free 'Assure' perennial ryegrass at 19.4 g/m2...Grub weights, percentage survival, and percentage infection were analyzed for main effects and interaction of endophyte levle, spore concentration, and sample date by multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) for repeated measures." States that "although the results should be interpreted conservatively because of the high incidence of milky disease, including natural occurrence in the controls, proportions of diseased grubs were similar for both endophyte treatments. Moreover, endophyte effects, if they occurred, seemingly would be stronger on diseased or stressed grubs than on healthy ones." Also states that "given the apparent absence of a main effect of endophyte on third-instar P. japonica, it is not surprising that we found no synergism between endophyte and infectivity of P. popilliae. This also implies that the endophyte did not negatively affect P. popilliae, as may occur with certain plant-parasitic nematodes."
