Abstract/Contents:Describes the history of the Environmental Protection Agency's regulation of pesticide products. Also discusses the EPA's role in relation to user groups, its pollution prevention policy, and new initiatives in regulation. Focuses on the reduced risk pesticide policy, accelerated registration of biological pesticides, exemption from tolerances, experimental use permit changes, section 28 of FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act), and an inter-office workgroup to promote alternatives for methyl bromide. Evaluates the current use, fate, and effects of turf pesticides, focusing on the effects on non-target organisms, human health effects, entry into ground and surface water, and mitigation measures. States that "EPA alone cannot do all that is needed to reduce the use and risks of pesticides. Other Federal agencies, State agencies, pesticide users, commodity groups, manufacturers, universities, consumers, public interest groups, and others all have an important role to play. All parties should think carefully about what they can do to help minimize the potential impacts of pesticides on the public health and environment."
