Abstract/Contents:Overviews the microbiology of turfgrass soils "so that one might be better able to appreciate the importance of soil organisms and anticipate the effects of management practices on those organisms." Explains that "the soil's microorganism population consists primailry of bacteria actinomycetes, fungi, algae and protozoa. In addition, larger organisms (macroorganisms) such as earthworms, nematodes, and insects are inhabitants of the turf/soil system. Bacteria are usually the most abundant microorganism under most conditions. It has been estimated that soil bacteria in a fertile soil can number 100 to 200 million per gram of soil (about one teaspoon full.)" Profiles bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, algae, protozoa, and earthworms. States that "although they are often overlooked, the micro- and macroorganism population is a typical turf/soil system is an extensive dynamic population. Without a healthy and balanced complement of these organisims, many of the essential processes involved in plant growth could not be accomplished."
