Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the ornamental grass trend, stating that "in the early days of the grass craze, it was assumed that all grasses were hardy, drought resistant, required full sun, and only asked for an occasional trim with a weed whacker or machete to keep them in their prime. Few plants would be able to live up to a sales pitch like that; a reality check was inevitable...In spite of unrealistic expectations, the marketing hype had enough basis in fact to keep sales of ornamental grasses going strong. Today, more than a decade since grasses were first promoted as garden ornamentals, the market may have hit a plateau overall, but sales of a few hot species are stronger than ever." Profiles those grasses that have proven to be popular including quaking grass, feather reed grass, sedge, tufted hair grass, fescue, hakone grass, blue oat grass, Japanese silver grass, purple moor grass, switch grass, and fountain grass. |
