Abstract/Contents:Discusses the history of deep vertical mowing, stating "deep vertical mowing is important for thatch removal and management. But for the last 12 years superintendents have relied almost exclusively on thatch management through aerification and topdressing." Describes how deep vertical mowing improves thatch management by allowing "for a disruption of the thatch layer so topdressing sand can penetrate more deeply within and hopefully through a surface thatch accumulation." Discusses the increased need for deep vertical mowing for quality bentgrass because "the new generation of bentgrasses and bermudagrasses are creating thatch accumulations more quickly and aggressively than many superintendents have ever seen."
