| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses a method of fighting drought by adding gypsum to the soil of Georgian colf courses to increase the pH. States that "while the top six inches of your soil may be drying out rapidly from plant transpiration and evaporation, you actually have an untapped reservoir of water just below your roots. So why don't the roots grow farther down? The pH of many Georiga subsoil horizons is simply too low (acidic) for bermudagrass roots to penetrate to any large degree." Also states that "by adding a large dose of gypsum to your fairways, the calcium sulfate dissolves readily and washes into your subsoil...The sulfate is absorbed onto the aluminum and iron minerals in the subsoil. These minerals give up a hydroxy group (OH) when the sulfate is absorbed. The calcium from your gypsum bonds with these hydroxy groups, creating lime, which raises the pH of the subsoil." Describes the application rate and timing for the gypsum, stating "the recommended rate for Georiga golf courses north of the fall line is to apply 4.5 tons/acre and 2.0 tons/acre below the line...The recommended time to apply gypsum is in the fall or winter to allow the winter rains to wash the material into the subsoil." |
