Abstract/Contents:"For professional soccer there is sometimes a conflict between team managers, who insist on close cutting heights to give a fast playing surface, and groundstaff who prefer to keep the grass longer to help its survival through the playing season and to encourage better rooting. The effects of cutting height, along with rolling and watering operations which are also used to give a faster playing surface, were examined on a sand-dominated rootzone receiving artificial wear. Reduced cutting height, within the range 18-30 mm reduced ball deceleration, grass cover and traction values. Rolling decreased sward height and ball deceleration, while ground cover and traction were lower in the second half of the season. Watering tended to slow down ball role. However, for low angle impacts, watering may cause the ball to skid, giving the impression of a faster playing surface. Watering before wear treatments and measurement of playing quality had no significant effect on grass cover but did reduce the hardness values and ball rebound. Potential compromises for the preparation of the playing surface are discussed."
