Abstract/Contents:"The rate of dry matter growth in meadow grasses was found to increase in dependence on the amounts of fertilizer nitrogen applied. Fertilizer nitrogen stimulated above all the uptake of macro-nutrients by the meadow plants. If the first cut was taken at the heading stage of Festuca pratensis, herbage yield came up to 74% of the yield obtained when the first cut had been taken at the flowering stage of Festuca pratensis. However, the herbage harvested at the heading stage contained 98% of the nitrogen, 85% of the phosphorus, 104% of the potassium, 91.5% of the calcium, 80% of the magnesium, and 95.6% of the sodium quantities found in the herbage from the later cutting date. The intensification of nitrogen fertilization caused the soluble carbohydrate content in the harvested crop to decline and the sugar/protein to go down. At later stage of plant development the sugar/protein ratio ratio showed a distinct tendency to increase."
