Abstract/Contents:In trials in the Ardennes on grey brown soil in an area with 1010 mm annual precipitation and a mean temp. of 7 deg C, sown swards of Italian ryegrass yielded 11.61-13.73 t DM/ha, perennial ryegrass 7.63-11.19 t/ha and timothy 10.42-14.85 t/ha. The opt. response of timothy to N varied with site: 10.95 t/ha at 350 kg N/ha in the Jurassic region, 11.3 t/ha at 450 kg N/ha in the Ardennes and 13 t/ha at 380 kg N/ha in the colder Famenne region. The value of regional research on grasslands was stressed. Swards of perennial ryegrass but not of timothy were invaded by Agropyron repens when given 150 or 300 kg N/ha. Timothy and the ryegrasses competed more effectively with Rumex crispus than did cocksfoot or meadow fescue.
