Abstract/Contents:Discusses how the golf courses in America's 100 Greatest golf course list were evaluated, including shot values, playability, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, and walkability. Also discusses how the course raters were selected, stating that "the ideal rater is a recreational golfer with a low-to-mid-handicap who has a strong interest in golf course architecture and is knowledgeable in the other aspects of course development and operations. Raters are volunteers who play and rate on their own time and out of their own pockets...Training is on the job. Fairmindedness is essential." Briefly discusses the objections of Roger Null, vice president and director of maintenance at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Missouri, who states that "I appreciate what Golf Digest is trying to do, and their system is probably the best one out there, but to me the whole idea is troubled by too much subjectivity from so many panelists...It's too political. I question whether all the raters have all the qualifications necessary to do the job and whether they can go about it the way they should--like having a real appreciation for the architecture."
