Abstract/Contents:In investigations on 14 samples of meadow fescue seed, caryopses (33% of the length of the palea did not germinate at all, those with lengths between 33 and 50% of that of the palea had 40.8% normal germination and larger caryopses 80.0% germination. Where all caryopses irrespective of degree of development were counted as pure seed and multiple-flowered spikelets were assumed to be single seed, the purity assessment figure was somewhat higher than for the prescribed method in which caryopses )33% of the length of the palea were counted as pure seed. Germination figures calculated using the former method were naturally lower, but both methods gave equally reliable assessments of the practical value of the seed samples. The former method took only 20% as much time as the prescribed method. Tests using more variable seed samples were recommended.
